The challenge on Robinson Crusoe Island: The hunt for the Juan Fernandez Firecrown Hummingbird
As many of you know, I’m no expert when it comes to birds. My standard joke is always that I can tell you they have wings and can fly – except for penguins! But the challenge of photographing them gets me every time. This was also the case during my stay on Robinson Crusoe Island.
Together with two excellent photographers, Conrad and Kevin, we set off in search of a very special target: the Juan Fernandez Firecrown Hummingbird. This little hummingbird, which can only be found on this remote island, really got on my last nerve.
Our day started early and I decided to set off on my own to explore the surrounding area. After a while, I discovered a beautiful ridge. The climb was anything but easy, as the volcanic rock was constantly crumbling away underfoot, but the view was definitely worth it. It was one of those moments when the effort is fully rewarded.
Back at camp, I met up with Conrad and Kevin and we decided to go in search of the Hummingbird. On the advice of some locals, we set off and hiked for over an hour through the area – unfortunately without success. After a well-earned lunch break, we ventured out again, and this time we had better luck.
The moment when we finally spotted the tiny hummingbird was simply indescribable. But getting him in front of the lens turned out to be a completely different challenge. I have rarely cursed so much, and I admit that I called him a “speedy little fucker” a few times. But in the end, patience and perseverance paid off and I’m more than happy with the result.
What I love so much about photography are exactly these moments – when you leave your comfort zone, get involved in something new and come back with a story and pictures that capture this experience. It’s not just the subjects, but also the adventures behind them that make photography so special for me.
