My picture in Oceanographic Magazine: A Porpoising Gentoo Penguin in Antarctica

At the beginning of November, I was out on the Zodiac with two fellow photographers at Edinburgh Hill in Antarctica when a large group of Gentoo penguins swam around our boat for a long time and eyed us curiously. It was fascinating to observe how the penguins acted in their natural behavior as they watched us intently. It was at this moment that the picture of the Porpoising Gentoo penguin was taken – a moment full of energy and life.

What makes this moment so special? At this early time of year, the penguins return to their nesting sites. It was impressive to see them interacting harmoniously with the icy water and demonstrating their typical method of locomotion, known as porpoising. This is a behavior in which the penguins emerge from the water and dive back in. It’s always a challenge to capture this moment perfectly! I can’t count how many times I have pictures in which only the feet or the head are sticking out of the water 😉

Being asked by Oceanographic magazine via social media if they would publish my image in their #myocean series was a huge honor for me. The magazine is known for its high quality and commitment to protecting our oceans – a cause close to my heart. It was a special recognition that they wanted to use my image for their series.

When I got home after my expedition at the beginning of March, I could hardly wait to see my published photo in the magazine. It was a moment that left me speechless and reminded me how privileged I am to be able to capture such moments with my camera.

Antarctica is a place of extreme conditions, but also a place full of life and natural beauty. It is always fascinating to see how the animals adapt to this environment and bring nature to life in all its splendor. This moment with the Gentoo penguin is just another example of why I am so committed to protecting this unique region and its inhabitants.
