Twenty years.
One obsession.
My name is Max Unterharnscheidt. I grew up in Germany, and for the past five years I’ve called the Swiss Alps home. I’ve been a photographer for over twenty years. It’s the only thing I ever really wanted to be.
I started as a wedding photographer. Working internationally, awards, a career that ran well for a long time. I photographed people on the best days of their lives, and I meant every frame. But somewhere along the way, I felt it: out there, something else was waiting. Something that needed me more than I needed it.
The shift came quietly. The longer I photographed, the clearer it became what images can actually do. Far beyond the moment they capture. They create attention. They move people. They start things. I wanted to point my camera exactly where it was needed.
2023 changed everything. I launched a social project in the Himalaya, supporting children’s education in remote regions. Months later I joined my first Antarctic expedition. A friend had connected me. I didn’t know what was coming. I only knew I had to go.
What I found there changed me. Since then: 30+ expeditions to Antarctica. The Arctic. Remote island communities in the South Pacific. The Juan Fernández archipelago. My work has appeared in Oceanographic Magazine, writing about the fragile balance of the Antarctic ecosystem and the threat of krill fishing. I hold the Antarctic Ambassador certificate, a recognition I take as a responsibility, not a title. f-stop Gear Ambassador. But these are only waypoints.
What I’m really about today: bringing people to places that change their picture of this world. I work increasingly in small groups, in personal formats. Because I’ve learned that the strongest moments happen in silence. Because I believe every person carries their own story inside them. They just need the space and the trust to tell it. Through their own images. In their own voice.
This is my work. It doesn’t feel like work anymore.
